Question by : can a credit buearu report a bad debt if they have no judgement in court?
i got a call from an attorney that works for a collection agency. their client says I owe them money for work done. I told them the contractor did not finish his contract and i don’t owe them the money. So can they just put a bad credit mark against my name without a judgement.

Every month you do not make the minimum payment, it’s reported as a slow pay on your credit files. It stays on your credit report for 7 years. If the contractor did not complete the job, sue him.

Yes they can, also was the work done on your home? If so the contractor can also place a lien on your house. It depends on the consumer laws in your state . If it was on a home, You can go to the courthouse and research your property for a lien to be sure.

Yes, sadly they can. If the contractor didn’t finish the job and he just sent your name to a collection agency instead of taking you to small claims court you need to file suit against the contractor in small claims (See what is the max limit in your county, use to be around $ 5000), inform the collector once you filed and ask them to better delete whatever derogatory info they have reported unless they want to be invited to the party.
