How The Rise In Consumer Credit Has Been Good For Credit Card Collection Agencies
How many credit cards do you have in your wallet or purse? If you have followed the trend you will probably have at least two.Consumer credit has grown exponentially in the last 10 years. Spending on credit cards, some say, is out of control with many individuals owing multiples of their annual salary in credit card debt. Credit card receivables balances are growing significantly which is good news for the credit card collection agency who undertakes credit card debt collection.
Credit card companies issue monthly statements to their card holders detailing purchases since the last statement date and payments made on the account. Credit card holders are required to make a payment to the credit card company each and every month in which there is a balance outstanding on the credit card. The amount of the payment made each month can be determined by the credit card holder provided it is equal to or more than the minimum payment required. All is well whilst at least the minimum monthly payment can be made but as soon as a monthly payment is missed the credit card account goes into default mode. It will depend on the credit strategy of the individual card issuing company and the previous payment record of the card holder as to what happens next. For those who have always made their payments on time the debt is unlikely to be passed to a collections agency. However, for persistent late or non-payers there is every chance that the debt will be passed to a credit card collection agency. Once a credit card receivable amount has been sold to a credit card collection agency no further payments are due to the original issuing company. All future payments should be made to the agency that has become responsible for the credit card debt collection as they now own the debt. There is some consumer credit protection in what can be done to collect the outstanding debt. No harassment is allowed nor is bullying or coercion. West Asset Management and other reputable collection companies pride themselves on acting within the law to collect amounts owing to them. If a credit card holder is unable to meet their financial commitments they would be well advised to keep in close contact with their credit card issuer to avoid the debt being passed into the collection process. Most credit card issuing companies will allow a month or two of grace on outstanding accounts if they know what is going on. After all, the balance outstanding is earning them interest. A credit card collection agency will be called in when the credit card holder fails to make payments and then fails to respond to communications. The issuing card company has little choice but to take matters further. |
